Beaconsfield is a city in Quebec, part of the Greater Montreal area and the administrative region of the same name, in Canada.

History

The city's name commemorates Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield (1804-1881), an English politician. In the 1910s, the area was primarily comprised of summer cottages and was a semi-rural community. The City of Beaconsfield absorbed the former resort town of Beaurepaire, which gave its name to a neighbourhood and the train station serving it. The city was amalgamated with the City of Montreal between 2002 and 2006.

Animals

Animal services in Beaconsfield are provided by the municipal patrol. The municipal animal shelter is located at 303A Beaconsfield Boulevard, behind the Herb Linder Annex. Stray dogs are held at the pound for up to three days and are taken to SPCA West, a no-kill shelter, if they are not claimed. However, the vast majority of dogs are reclaimed within an hour or two, as most are microchipped. Only about two or three dogs are taken in each year. The pound is closed to the public and can only take lost dogs. They cannot take in abandoned animals and do not provide adoption or fostering services. The pound is quite small, with the three kennels usually empty.

Beaconsfield was certified as a PETA-certified Compassionate City in 2016 due to its progressive regulations. Beaconsfield is also listed as a Humane City by The FurBearers, an animal rights organization dedicated to ending the fur industry. A full list of cities that ban or restrict trapping can be found here.

Geography

Beaconsfield is located on the west side of the Island of Montreal, on the shores of Lake Saint-Louis. The city is bordered to the west by Baie-d'Urfé, to the north by Kirkland, and to the east by Pointe-Claire. Its territory borders that of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue to the northwest.

The city's territory is situated in a district known as the West Island's Lakeshore, which explains its predominantly English-speaking population.
